Coverage by area
Neighborhoods we cover in Somerville
- 01
Davis Square
Students, cafes, and the Red Line converge in one of the city's busiest hubs. U-wifi plugs in and works without an installer, so renters turning over every June don't wait for a truck.
- 02
Assembly Square
New towers, outlet stores, and waterfront apartments that went up in the last decade. Tower-based internet reaches brand-new buildings the week they open, no trenching required.
- 03
Union Square
Old storefronts, new condos, and the Green Line extension brought a wave of newcomers. A plug-and-play gateway works in century-old triple-deckers and ground-floor retail alike.
- 04
East Somerville
Residential blocks with a mix of long-time families and first-time renters. Streets are narrow and wiring is inconsistent; a multi-carrier connection reaches every address without rewiring the block.
- 05
Spring Hill
Quiet streets near the Tufts campus with a rotating population of graduate students. U-wifi ships free in two days and you set it up yourself, so you're online before orientation.
- 06
Winter Hill
Three-deckers, corner stores, and families who've been here for generations. Wired options vary by street; U-wifi works the same on every block because it runs on towers, not cables.
FAQ
Common questions about internet in Somerville
How much does home internet cost in Somerville?
U-wifi Home Unlimited is $55 a month anywhere we're live in Somerville, whether you're in Davis Square, Union Square or out by Assembly Square. The next-gen gateway, two-day shipping and your first 30 days are free, and there's no contract. Or pay nothing at all with FreeU: watch ads you choose in the U-wifi app and earn credit toward your bill.
How does free internet in Somerville work?
Every U-wifi customer in Somerville can switch on FreeU inside the U-wifi app. Our Choice Advertising model lets you pick the ads you see, and watching them earns credit against your monthly service. Watch enough and the $55 is covered. Keep watching past that and you earn U-Bonus points toward merchandise in the U-store. Same gateway, same unlimited data, same speeds.
How fast is U-wifi internet in Somerville?
Wired speeds in Somerville vary by street and building age. Some blocks have fiber, others have old copper, and many triple-deckers share a single line across multiple units. U-wifi doesn't tie you to one network. Our gateway picks the strongest 5G signal at your address across the major national carriers and switches if a better one appears, so you get the best speed available in your part of Somerville at any given hour. For the best signal, put the gateway near a window on the highest floor, facing the nearest tower.
Do nor'easters and winter storms affect internet service in Somerville?
Nor'easters and winter storms bring heavy snow, ice, and wind that can knock out power and damage infrastructure across New England. Because U-wifi runs on multiple carrier networks instead of a single cable line, if one tower goes down your gateway shifts to the next available one. During a major storm, service depends on carrier tower power and backup systems, but you're not waiting on a single provider to send a truck.
Can I get U-wifi in an apartment in Somerville?
Yes. Somerville is apartment-heavy, especially around Davis Square and Union Square, where renters move in and out every year and need internet that works day one. The gateway plugs into any outlet and works best near a window. No drilling, no antennas on the roof and nothing to remove when you move out. The gateway's wifi covers a typical 2,500 square foot home and supports up to 256 devices, so a one-bedroom or a shared house is fine.
How do I set up U-wifi in Somerville?
Enter your Somerville address to confirm coverage, order, and the gateway arrives within two days. Plug it in, find the U-wifi network on your phone or laptop, and enter the password printed on the bottom of the gateway. That's the whole install. No technician, no appointment window, and your first 30 days are a free trial.
What happens if I move within Somerville?
Pack the gateway, plug it in at the new address and connect as usual. Then sign in to your U-wifi account and update your address. Nothing to return, nothing to reschedule, and the price stays the same.
What areas near Somerville does U-wifi serve?
U-wifi is live across Somerville and in Cambridge, Medford and Everett. Enter your address to confirm availability at your home. If you're on the edge of coverage, the gateway also supports an external antenna for weaker 5G areas.
